    Floor finishes to compare

Ten looks across the five families of floor we install, with a short note on where each one makes sense in a Durban home or business.

Please note: every picture on this page is an illustration made by computer to show a type of finish. None of them is a photograph of a floor we have completed, and none shows a real client's property.

    Solid colour

One colour across the whole floor, in gloss or a softer sheen. Pale shades brighten a room that gets little daylight, though they also show sandy footprints from the beach. Darker shades are more forgiving in a garage or a home gym.

Solid colour is the usual choice for a coated garage floor, and it suits salons and passages just as well.

    Metallic

Metallic pigment drifts while the coat is still wet, which gives each pour its own pattern. You choose the colours and the direction of movement, not the exact swirl. In a lounge that faces the sea and takes afternoon sun, plan on a UV-resistant topcoat, since the epoxy itself may shift colour where sunlight falls on it.

There is more on how the pours are built on the metallic finishes page.

    Flake

Coloured chips are scattered into the base coat and sealed under a clear one. The broken pattern disguises grit, dust and small marks between cleans, which is why flake works well in workshops and garages that double as a way into the house.

Blends and chip sizes are covered under flake epoxy.

    Industrial and textured

Warehouse floors get painted lane lines to keep people apart from forklifts. Covered verandas and pool surrounds get a textured finish instead, made by broadcasting quartz sand into a wet coat and sealing over it, so the floor still grips when wet feet cross it.

Factory, warehouse and logistics floors are handled on our industrial flooring page.

    Polyurethane

A matte, seamless floor for commercial kitchens and food rooms that are washed down every day, with the floor falling to a drain.

Where this system fits, and where epoxy is enough, is set out on the polyurethane flooring page.
